Welcome to Woodlands, the Additionally Resourced Provision (ARP) at Pickhurst Academy.
Woodlands (ARP) is for KS2 aged children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Children attending Woodlands have a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Woodlands (ARP) Aims:
- To have high expectations of all children with SEND, and to raise levels of attainment, progress and achievement.
- To innovate curriculum development and develop a range of strategies to provide effective education for all children with SEND and facilitate their inclusion into the mainstream environment and events.
- To provide high quality education and care for children and demonstrate expertise in working with children with communication needs, neurodevelopmental needs (including ASD) and other, moderate learning needs.
- To ensure effective partnership working between school, the wider community and health and social services.
All Woodlands staff are experienced within working with children with SEND, with relevant training in specific areas of requirement, they are also dedicated to ensuring that Woodlands uses the approaches and strategies essential to provide the children with the most appropriate learning environment to suit their learning style and needs, to ultimately be successful.
The children are taught in small groups for maths and English to enable them to develop their reading, writing, communication and maths skills at their own pace and appropriate level. Children have the opportunity to work independently to further develop and consolidate skills learned. Specialist SEND approaches are used to deliver the curriculum, with specific resources created to support and enhance the teaching and learning alongside the adaptive teaching techniques required. Visually supported communication is a key aspect of practice in Woodlands, and supports children’s understanding as well as their ability to communicate their wants and needs.
Inclusion within our mainstream school community is another important part of school life in Woodlands. The is child-specific and may start with very short periods of time, building up for some children to spend a significant part of their day with their mainstream peers. This provides the children with the opportunity to transfer social skills learnt in the smaller group setting of Woodlands to a wider setting, as well as access wider learning opportunities, and interact and socialise with their age-appropriate peers in different environments.
Our curriculum has been developed as three separate pathways enabling the most appropriate teaching style and style of learning to be accessible for all students. Students have the option to change pathway during their time at Pickhurst but only when this deemed appropriate. The curriculum is adapted to meet the individual needs of the children, with an individualised approach for specific students.
