How Does Maths at Pickhurst Facilitate the School’s Curriculum Intent?
At Pickhurst Academy, we believe that successful mathematicians are inquisitive, adaptable learners who demonstrate confidence, resilience and a willingness to take risks. Our pupils are encouraged to be adventurous in their thinking, flexible in their approaches and reflective about their learning. Through practical activities, exploration and purposeful discussion, we aim to ensure that all children develop strong mental fluency and a deep understanding of patterns and connections within the number system.
A key focus of mathematics learning at Pickhurst is the process, not just the answer. Children are encouraged to explain how they reached their conclusions, reflect on different methods and make their own discoveries. This approach helps pupils to become confident users of mathematical language and competent in applying their knowledge to real-life contexts. Over time, they develop reliable and efficient strategies for calculating, reasoning and problem solving through logical and systematic thinking.
We set high expectations for all learners and encourage them to aspire to achieve their best. Our goal is for children to leave Pickhurst with the confidence to use mathematics in their everyday lives, while fostering enjoyment, curiosity and enthusiasm for the subject.
In 2014, a new Mathematics National Curriculum was introduced and became statutory for all pupils from September 2015. It highlights the importance of mathematics in understanding the world and developing reasoning skills. As stated in the National Curriculum (2014):
“A high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.”
The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through regular practice and increasing challenge. Pupils are taught to reason mathematically by following lines of enquiry, identifying patterns and relationships, and justifying their thinking using appropriate mathematical language. They are also supported to solve a wide range of routine and non-routine problems by breaking them down into manageable steps and persevering to find solutions.
All children at Pickhurst Academy study mathematics four times a week. Teachers follow the White Rose Maths scheme to ensure full coverage of National Curriculum objectives.
Additional Maths Gym and Arithmetic sessions provide regular opportunities to strengthen fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Progress is assessed three times a year, at the end of each term, to inform teaching and support pupil development.
Hi, my name is Adi and I am one of this year’s Maths Ambassador. I am passionate about promoting a love for mathematics within our school community. My role will involves supporting and inspiring everyone to see maths not just as a subject, but as a vital skill that shapes how we understand and solve problems in the real world. I will be helping to organise maths-related events such as competitions, challenges, and workshops, encouraging everyone to explore creative and practical ways to apply their knowledge.
I also work closely with Miss Mootoo to support younger students, offering guidance, sharing study tips, and helping to build confidence in their mathematical abilities. Being a Maths Ambassador will allow me to develop my leadership, teamwork, and communication skills while showing others that maths can be exciting, rewarding, and accessible to everyone. I’m proud to be playing a part in making maths a subject that everyone can enjoy!
Hi, my name is Lohara and I am also one of the Maths Ambassadors this year. As Maths Ambassador, I will inspire students to explore and enjoy mathematics in creative and meaningful ways. I will organise events, workshops, and challenges that make learning interactive, engaging, and relevant to everyday life. By connecting mathematical concepts to real-world problems, I will show students the power of maths in areas such as science, technology, finance, and engineering. I will support peers through mentoring and tutoring, helping them build confidence, curiosity, and problem-solving skills. In leading collaborative projects and team activities, I will foster a positive and inclusive school culture where everyone feels capable and motivated to succeed.
This role will also allow me to develop my own skills in leadership, communication, and teamwork. As a Maths Ambassador, I will demonstrate that mathematics is not just a subject in school—it is a valuable tool for understanding the world and unlocking opportunities for the future.
Homework
Every week, homework is provided for all children. They can be found on MyMaths and on Times Table Rock Stars. These resources enable children to revisit previous learning with guided tutorials and provide opportunities to practise their fluency skills whilst answering Times Table questions.
