How Does Computing at Pickhurst Facilitate the School’s Curriculum Intent?

Learning computing skills is an exciting, creative, and sometimes challenging journey. At Pickhurst, we aim for our pupils to feel confident exploring and developing new skills together. As technology becomes increasingly integral to daily life, strong computing skills will be essential for future careers.

To provide the best possible education, we follow the Kapow Primary Computing scheme, which delivers an ambitious and inclusive curriculum. The scheme is carefully planned and sequenced to build knowledge and skills progressively, empowering pupils to become the coders, app designers, and digital creators of the future.

Children at Pickhurst engage with a wide range of computing topics. They develop essential computer skills, including using emails, search engines, and Google programs such as Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. They also explore the history of computing, investigating pioneers and code breakers, and study how data is transmitted, for example through the workings of the Mars Rover. Creativity and problem-solving are developed through coding projects in Music, Art, and Games, using platforms such as Scratch.

Online Safety is a key priority. Pupils learn to stay safe online through termly lessons that cover topics such as trust, online identities, responsible communication, and understanding the impact of their digital presence.

Collaboration is central to our approach. Pupils work together on projects that build towards a final outcome, revisiting familiar tools and themes to reinforce learning in a spiral curriculum.

Learning at Pickhurst is not confined to screens alone. Pupils often complete practical tasks related to computing concepts, ensuring they gain hands-on experience alongside digital skills. Our computing curriculum is designed to prepare pupils for a future where technology is central to most careers and to give them the confidence and knowledge to succeed in an ever-changing world.

Hello, my name is Benedict. I am a Computing ambassador. I wanted to do this role because Computing is my favourite subject. I like it because it is a very practical, fun and important subject.

I want to help everyone be amazing at Computing. I want to help everyone be amazing at I.C.T. I have lots of ideas for our school this year:

  1. E-safety. I want everyone to know about e-safety. For example, I am making a Google form to find out what people know about it.
  2. New laptops. I will communicate with School Council to raise money for new laptops because every year’s laptops (except Year 5) need improvements.
  3. New curriculum. I would like to suggest new topics, e.g., more advanced options in programming than scratch sprites, and website developing.
  4. Exhibitions. I will help to suggest and organise trips, e.g., Information Age at the Science Museum.
  5. Helping out. I will assist other classes in this subject when they need it. Also, I will help out at scratch club and encourage people to come.
  6. Assemblies. I will contribute to assemblies on topics like e-safety and exhibitions.
  7. New clubs. I will suggest new clubs such as educational computing game club.
  8. Sharing opinions. I will talk to the computing lead about improving I.C.T. I will help other people to get involved in our subject and ask them what they think about it, e.g., through a Google form or discussion.

By the end of the year, I hope everyone will love Computing even more. I am super proud to be one of the ambassadors. I am always happy to talk about Computing!

In Computing, I would like Pickhurst to learn about e-safety, HTML and devices like computers and mobiles.

I became Computing ambassador as I would like to teach everybody what I know about computing and coding. I am also an expert at coding in Scratch, so I am happy to give you coding advice!
