At Pickhurst we aim to offer a progressive art curriculum that focuses not only on the skills and techniques that are taught but also developing the children’s knowledge of art history and their critical thinking, which will allow the children to reflect on the work they produce.

The children will cover a board range of mediums throughout their time at Pickhurst, including but not limited to painting drawing, three-dimensional sculpture and digital photograph. We aim to use these mediums to expose the children to a wide range of artists, concepts, movement and techniques to expand the children’s knowledge and understand of what “Art” can be. While, also giving them context as to how their own ideas and styles fit in to the world of art.

We delighted to see the children’s work recognised and highlighted by entering into art competitions. Including “Stamps for Heroes” and “Young Artists’ Summer Show”.

We have also had the pleasure of inviting current practitioners to Pickhurst to inspire the children. In May of 2021, professional Artist and winner of the “Sky Arts portrait artist of the year” Curtis Holder, visited our year 5 classes to speak about his work and experiences and view the children’s final pieces.

My name is Bonnie H (Yew Class) and I am the Art ambassador at Pickhurst this year. I was so excited to be chosen as I have such a passion for Art and create many things in my free time! I have helped Miss Kennedy choose winners of Art competitions, organise our Christmas cards fundraiser and I am really looking forward to STEAM week to raise the profile of Art.

I am Sofia and I am the Design Technology subject ambassador. I think DT is a really fun subject because you can use your imagination and create interesting objects. I have attended many clubs that involve DT such as sewing and art and I also enjoy baking. I want to do my best to make sure that DT is enjoyed by everyone in the school!

Design and Technology (D&T) involves designing, making and evaluating items for a specific purpose. We will be offering range of topics including cooking, which including all aspects of health and safety, is now a focal point and as such. Building structures so the children can plan, modify designs and work in different scales. Working with textiles, CAD and creating motorised machines.

Staff and children from all year groups are able to access the wide-ranging D&T resources to enhance learning and promote creativity.

D&T we are are looking to place an emphasis on working systematically and creatively. During these sessions, children are encouraged to solve design problems and produce an outcome based on

“Creativity is allowing oneself make mistakes, Art is knowing which ones to keep.”

“Make it simple, but significant.”
